“Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him a name that is above every name” (Philippians 2:9 NIV)
Jesus was the name divinely given before His virgin birth. “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus…” (Matthew 1:21, NIV). So with this ineffable name Jesus wrapped Himself around with the garment of our humanity.
Other names are dear but the name of Jesus is dearer. This familiar yet precious name, according to Dr Herbert Lockyer (1886-1984) occurs some seven hundred times in the New Testament.
Joshua saved the people of Israel by leading them through River Jordan. He fought their battles and was steadfast in his allegiance to God and his people. Jesus is our heavenly Joshua, who fought the grim battle on our behalf at Calvary, providing thereby a blood-bought deliverance for sin-bound souls.
Jesus is now our Leader, our Protector, and our Defender and will never cease in His care for us until He has us safely in the sheepfold on the other side. There is power in the name of Jesus. Jesus’ name is the weapon to fight the believer’s enemy – the devil. This name is above every name. There is no other name like the name of Jesus. Anyone who believes in his or her heart and confesses Jesus as Lord is under the canopy of His mighty name.

Have I truly surrendered my life to Jesus, the only Saviour of the world?

Thank you Lord Jesus that in humility you have been highly exalted. Your name is our strong tower and our hiding place. Amen.
