The Unlikely Choice

Introduction

Surprise! Human beings are excited about surprises, especially when it is a pleasant one. It is one reason the Father Christmas tradition is still active and relevant in many cultures, because he is believed to have been going about and giving out gifts that take us by surprise. It is my prayer that God will visit you with a pleasant surprise this Christmas and in the New Year! May divine selection affect someone this Christmas, and may his or her position, title, residence, car, attitude, family situation etc change miraculously! We will soon discover that the Christmas narrative (Nativity story) is full of unlikely choices.
Occasionally you receive gifts you hardly expected or donations that you think you didn’t deserve. And this makes you the unlikely choice or the unexpected recipient. It could also come in the form of an appointment, a promotion, a business deal, a marriage proposal, or a child birth that you think you were not qualified for. Human beings observe certain protocols when giving gifts or selecting people for certain offers, appointments and positions. They might consider your family background to find out if you are a Mandela or a Sisulu. Your level of education could be a factor, as you don’t stand a chance to be selected over a professor. Your financial capacity could be a catalyst for selection; the richer you are, the better your chances. Beauty pageants look for the most beautiful, in boxing the referee selects the stronger of the two combatants, judges in track athletics pick the fastest, and the best performer is always located in competitions to carry the much-coveted prize.
Thankfully God’s standards are different because, “His ways are not our ways” (Isa 55:8). God’s criterion for selection is grace or underserved favour. God will rather qualify those disqualified by human standards. According to the Preacher, “the race is not to the swift, and the battle is not for the strong …” (Eccle 9:11). With God, the less qualified you are, the better are your chances of winning the contest. Paul states categorically, “Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong” (1 Cor 1:26-27).
The Christmas story is full of unlikely choices. Ultimately God’s gift to humanity in Christ Jesus is the most amazing surprise anyone can imagine. No wonder His birth occurred among people, at a place, and in circumstances that were rather unexpected. In deed there were many unlikely choices connected to the birth of Christ, the following are just a few:
– The choice of Mary as mother of God
– The choice of Bethlehem as the place for the most famous birth
– The choice of a manger for the site of birth Christ’s birth
– The choice of the shepherds as the first audience to the news of His birth.
Let’s now consider them individually.

Christmas Message – Jesus, the Source of Salvation for All People

“For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: Luke 2: 30 – 31″

Introduction

This presentation deals with Jesus, who is the source of salvation for all people. Jesus has become our salvation. He is our strength and our song. The presentation will touch on the meaning of salvation. It will focus on the African perspective of salvation, how the Old Testament and the New Testament viewed salvation. Finally, I will touch on how Jesus’ contemporaries saw him and how he is seen in our contemporary world would be highlighted.

Definitions

  1. Source

“Source” is defined as a place or a person where something can be obtained. In other words it is the origin of something.

  1. Salvation

Literally, “salvation” means preservation or deliverance from harm, ruin or loss.

Theologically, “salvation” means deliverance from sin and its consequences. The process of being saved, the state of having been saved (from hell).

The Hebrew word for salvation is yasa which means deliverance.

The Greek word is soteria which means deliverance and preservation from danger.

  1. African view of Salvation (“usindiso” in Xhosa)

Africans believe that salvation is:

  1. An ideal condition for human well-being and ultimate self fulfilment.
  2. Protection from evil forces of destruction.
  3. Freedom from evil forces
  4. It deals with preservation of cosmic, social order and harmony
  5. It deals with the restoration of a broken life.

Due to all the above, there is a need for equilibrium and harmony and these come through sacrifice and rituals of animals. In Xhosa culture, part of the animal’s skin is put in the neck and the wrist of the person who has obtained salvation. This is for identification purpose. But now, it is not animal blood which can save mankind but the blood of Jesus which was shed on the cross. We are identified as children of God (Rom 8:14-17).

Profile of Apostle Eric Nyamekye

Apostle Eric Kwabena Nyamekye was born on October 21, 1965, to Mr Stephen Antiedu Nyamekye (late) and Agnes Owusu in Asokore-Ashanti.

He completed Tema Secondary School in 1983 and proceeded to Nyankpala Agric College in the Northern Region, where he obtained a certificate in General Agriculture in 1986.

He also holds a diploma in Human Resource Management from the Institute of Commercial Management, U.K., a post-graduate Diploma in Applied Theology from the University of Manchester, U.K., and a Master of Arts Degree in Religious Studies from the University of Ghana, Legon.

He is currently a PhD student at the Stellenbosch University, South Africa.

Apostle Nyamekye worked with Technology Consultancy Center, KNUST, for three (3) years before he was called into the full-time ministry of The Church of Pentecost in 1991 and stationed at Daboase in the Western Region between 1991 and 1995.

He was later transferred to Agona Nsaba in the Central Region (1995- 1999), where he was ordained as a Pastor in 1996.

Between 1999 and 2005, he was sent on missions to the Republic of South Africa. He was recalled home in 2005 and stationed at East Legon, where he served as a District Pastor till 2008.

He also became the Resident Minister of Atomic branch of the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC) from 2008 to 2011. He was later called into the Office of Apostle and transferred to Tamale as Area Head from 2011 to 2015. Until his election, he served as the Koforidua Area Head of the Church.

He is married to Mary and are blessed with six children.

Chairman Nyamekye Marks First Day At Work

The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost (COP), Apostle Eric Nyamekye experienced his first day on the job on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 after a short handing-over ceremony was held at the Headquarters at La in Accra.

The event, which was witnessed by the General Secretary, Apostle Alexander Nana Yaw Kumi-Larbi, and the International Missions Director, Apostle Emmanuel Gyesi-Addo, saw Apostle Eric Nyamekye formally taking over the administrative responsibilities of the Church from his predecessor, Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah (retired).

Apostle Prof. Opoku Onyinah presented to the new Chairman a signed copy of his hand-over notes as well as some personal documents which, according to him, would be very helpful to the new Chairman in discharging his duties. He then ceremonially put Apostle Eric Nyamekye in the Chairman’s seat to signify his assumption of office.

Speaking at the ceremony, the outgone Chairman remarked that: “Ten years ago, I was officially welcomed into this office to begin official duties as Chairman of The Church of Pentecost. As soon as I began work I purposed in my heart to find a successor. It therefore gives me great pleasure to hand over to the new Chairman, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, to lead the Church.

“I am very content and happy with what God has accomplished for His church for the last ten years and for the smooth transition of leadership He has granted us. I trust that He will continue to be with Apostle Eric Nyamekye as he leads the Church to higher heights. It is my prayer that, under his leadership, the Church would record more successes than ever before.”

Apostle Nyamekye, in his response, thanked God for the great feat He has achieved for the Church and for counting him worthy to serve in the highest office of the Church.

“I am grateful to God for what He has done for His church. I consider myself very privileged to be called to serve in this high office. Indeed, not everyone would have the opportunity to serve as Chairman of the Church. I have always said that I am probably not the best candidate for the office, there are others who are better than I am, but it is the Lord who has favoured me, so I am very grateful to Him.

“I am also grateful to Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah for the support and orientation he has given me especially since my election. He has clearly shown that he is very delighted about what the Lord has done, so I know that I can always count on his support and that of Apostle Dr. Michael K. Ntumy,” he said.

Apostles Kumi-Larbi and Gyesi-Addo also expressed some of their fond memories about the outgone Chairman and expressed their eagerness to commence work with the new Chairman in order to advance the Kingdom business.

As part of his first day in the office, the General Secretary together with Pastor Nicholas Darko (Finance and Administration Director), and Elder Nicholas Kumankoma (Chief Human Resource Manager), gave the Chairman a tour of the departments and offices at the Headquarters.

The tour also took them to the premises of PENT TV, where the Chairman was met by children of Kodie District in the Suame Area of the Church, who were on an excursion to the Headquarters.

Apostle Eric Nyamekye offered a word of prayer for them and joined them to take a group photograph to the delight of the children.

NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERS ADDRESS TO THE YOUTH(MAIDEN AREA CAMP 2018) – Pastor Dominic Dela Denyo

I am pleased to welcome all of you here in the name of God the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit and on behalf of the national youth executive.

I am very much excited in my spirit to say that, 2018 Area youth camp, marks the beginning of a landmark in the growth processes of the COPSA.  I want to dress up the headaches that come with organizing a camp, in these words; It has not been easy, but it is worth it and it has become possible.

We want to express our gratitude to the National head of COPSA, Apostle Dr. Dela Quampah for his personal interest in the youth and his burden to ensure the youth instrument in the Church is vitalized. Together with his entire executives, the Youth ministry is grateful.

We also express our gratitude to Johannesburg area Coordinator, Pastor James Alfred Quaicoe, our host district Pastor and his executives and the Jhb area pastorate for their burden to ensure we run this maiden camp, successfully without deficit. We are aware of all those sacrifices and your bits to ensure the camp happens; May your labour never be in vain and may your reward be great.

Our theme is “Sound basic gospel produces sound youth” carved from 1 John 2:24-25, and our slogan is, “back to basics.” and this camp shall empower us to repent from possible high mindedness and the temptations that come from being overly aware, interested and updated with all other things in the world but scripture. Some of you will understand after this camp the biblical reasons to “why we don’t do what we don’t do and why we do what we do

Please let it be on records that, the reflection of Dr. Dela  Quampah (national head) is true; “the purpose of COPSA youth ministry is not Youth Camp”, in that spirit , I want to charge all participants to go back to your various local Churches and light up, by attending your scheduled youth services and penetrate our communities with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The primary purpose for camp 2018 is to Challenge the youth for a cause, through the foundational instruments of our fathers (Tenets); I am very optimistic that, we can change the course of affairs in the World today through our tertiary institutions, but these ideas will be still born if you graduate and you decide to leave COPSA also.  In relation to scripture, I can tell you for a fact that, we are living in desperately dangerous times and we must be able to consistently and persistently engage the conditions around us with scripture and our biblical lifestyles and Christian TREND settings.

You are my witness that, today our high schools and tertiary institutions have become the cesspools of immorality, rebellion and the hotbed for anti-Christian worldviews and the future Parents, teachers, journalists, politicians, engineers, doctors, lawyers, scientist, bakers and business men and women are currently studying on that campus; that makes our campuses a strategic harvest field.

Since you are in that college, university and high school, can you please explore the opportunity for us to come into such environment with PENSA, which is long overdue? All you need to do is to get interested and hit a button to send a whatshap message to 071 847 0271. The incentives for doing that are many.

I want to specially thank all our facilitators who accepted our invitation to come and impart anointing, knowledge and experience. To our first – time campers, you are warmly welcome to fellowship in our spirit filled environment.

Let me close off by this; if you snooze at this camp, you will lose. Catch both the letter and the spirit as we sharpen our basics. Never forget that Sound basic biblical teaching will produce Sound YOU!
